Rocketry

The SWOSU Rocketry Team works all school year to build and design rockets. In the spring, we enter the Argonia Cup! This competition is a rocketry competition in Argnia, Kansas that challenges collegiate teams to rise to a significant challenge. They do so by designing, building, and executing a "multi-discipline rocketry project utilizing innovative engineering and technology concepts." This year, the challenge includes delivering a payload of a golf ball to a target using the rocket and any creative ideas that the teams can think of. Members of our team are also able the get their level one and two High Power Rocket Certifications!

Drones

The Physics Club works with and operates drones! We have built them from scratch, 3D printed parts for them, and flown them ourselves. We are able to fly our main drones using virtual reality headsets to see through a camera attached to the drone. This allows us to see the drone's point of view! We have several small drones that we use to practice flying so that we do not damage our main ones and if you are interested in learning to fly for the Physics Club, come to a meeting and ask for one!

Dobs Telescopes

We have reclaimed optical equipment from some of our older, unusable telescopes, which has
been incorporated into new portable Dobsonian telescopes. First, we built a new Dobsonian base for a
broken telescope. Then, we
built a telescope from scratch around a 6-inch diameter mirror.  We mastered a certain level of precision in our smaller
telescope builds. Now we are in the process of building a telescope from scratch around a 16-inch
diameter mirror which was donated to the SWOSU Physics Department many years ago. We are well
underway with the design and construction process. The 16-telescope, affectionately
named “Tiny"
, when completed, will rival the automated telescope in the
SWOSU observatory.
